NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Old Dominion University men’s tennis team completed action in the inaugural Ivy Plus Invitational on Sunday. The Ivy Plus Invitational was hosted by Yale University.
The Monarchs gained valuable experience against some of the country’s stiffest competition throughout this past weekend in New Haven, Conn.
No. 59 Carlos Lopez Villa opened up his single’s tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Cornell’s Alex Sidney. After Lopez Villa dropped his quarterfinal match, he pulled off two straight wins over Nicky Hu (Harvard) and Asika Isoh (Army) to claim the winner’s A-Bracket consolation crown.
ODU freshman Koen Wiggermans raised many eyebrows with his performance at the 2013 Ivy Plus Invitational as he picked up victories against Penn’s Thomas Spratt (6-5, 6-4) and Yale’s Jason Brown (6-3, 6-2). Wiggerman left the tournament with a 2-2 overall record.
No. 59 Lopez Villa teamed up with Jonas Kuwert in the top division of the doubles tournament to defeat Harvard’s Steinroeder and Yeung, 8-7 (4). Lopez Villa then joined forces with teammate Dante Terenzio and toppled Brown’s tandem of Garcia and Grant, 8-2. In the semifinal of the winner’s A-Bracket, Lopez Villa and Terenzio fell 8-6 in a hard fought match to St. John’s Reyes and Del Nunzio.
The Old Dominion University men’s tennis team will be back in action this weekend in the 2013 ITA Men’s All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
