LOUISVILLE, Ky. - No. 20 ODU (2-6) received early goals from senior forward Danielle Clutter and sophomore forward Teisha King and the Lady Monarchs won 3-1 over Michigan State (3-6) at Trager Staduim.
Clutter started the scoring in the first half with a rebound goal off of a penalty corner. King added a goal off a scramble in front of the cage at 28:35.
Michigan State junior forward Abby Barker scored nearly two minutes into the second half. ODU answered at 44:33 with a goal by Sarah Breen off a penalty corner.
"We played a great first half, moved the ball very well and got out to a lead, which was important," said ODU Head Coach Andrew Griffiths. "Our defense was strong, and limited them to only a couple of scoring opportunities."
ODU outshot MSU, 13-5 as MSU's keeper Molly Cassidy had 6 saves and Lady Monarch red-shirt sophomore keeper Megan Hept (Chesapeake, VA.) made four stops.
The Lady Monarchs return home next Friday for the Big East home opener against Providence at 3 p.m., and non-conference action against Quinnipiac on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
