NORFOLK, VA- The ODU Soccer Monarchs( 2-2) host the Keydets of VMI Friday night at 7 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex. This will be the first meeting between the two schools since 1997.
ODU’s Tim Hopkinson leads the Monarchs with seven points on three goals and one assist which ranks him sixth in C-USA. He is also sixth in the league in goals with three. Ivan Militar is next with two points and two assists for six total points. Hopkinson received honorable mention notice by C-USA for his two goal performance against UCF in the ODU Stihl Soccer Classic.
ODU head coach Alan Dawson is the third winningest coach in C-USA with 313 career victories, following Mark Berson of South Carolina with 457 and Marshall’s Bob Gray with 423. In fourth place is UAB’s Mike Getman with 280 and New Mexico’s Jeremy Fishbein has 252 for fifth.
In NCAA bids, only South Carolina has more with 20, followed by ODU with 11 and New Mexico with 10. There are six C-USA players on the 34-player MAC Hermann Trophy watch list. Joining ODU’s Gideon Asante are Giuseppe Gentile and Tyler Gibson of Charlotte, Kyle Venter of New Mexico, Tulsa brothers Christian and Omar Mata.
The Keydets (0-5-1) are led by freshman midfielder Wes Saupe with three points on a goal and an assist.
Aaron White and Blake McCauley each have a goal as well. VMI lost at fellow C-USA rival Marshall, 2-0 Tuesday night.
SERIES: The Monarchs lead the series, 6-2 and have won the last six meetings. The series began in 1972 and the last meeting was in 1997.
Any fan with a parents weekend wrist ban will be admitted in to the match for $3.00.
