DURHAM, NC - The No. 15 Old Dominion field hockey team fell, 1-0, against No. 9 Duke Sunday afternoon at Jack Katz Stadium. The Lady Monarchs (1-5) outshot the Blue Devils 15-10 but were unable to put a goal in the net.
"We had many offensive opportunities," ODU Head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "We had 15 shots and 9 penalty corners and could not score. Those numbers speak for themselves."
After the first half went scoreless, Duke found the back of the cage in the second half when junior forward Jessica Buttinger found space in front of the circle and sent a shot in the net at 64:53 to end the game. ODU had many opportunites to score. Sarah Breen led the way for the Lady Monarchs with 4 shots, Megan Byas and Christy Longacre each had 3 shots.
ODU travels to play two games in Louisville, KY., next weekend, facing the Cardinals Sept. 20 and Michigan State Sept. 22.
