NORFOLK, VA— ODU senior forward Tim Hopkinson’s (Nottingham, England) goal in the final seven minutes of the match lifted the Soccer Monarchs to a 2-1 victory over UCF in the 38th annual Stihl Soccer Classic. It was Hopkinson’s second goal of the game and third of the season. ODU improves to 2-2 while UCF fall to 1-2-2.
In the earlier match, William and Mary defeated No. 1 Creighton, 3-2 on Jeff Bombelles goal with four minutes left in the second overtime period to win the Tournament.
The Monarchs scored first as Hopkinson scored on an unassisted goal 12:12 into the match. The Knights of UCF got the equalizer as Romario Williams scored on an assist from Omar Vallejo.
The game winner came off a corner kick from junior Ivan Militar (Szeged, Hungary). Hopkinson came in and headed it into the net. The Monarchs outshot UCF, 20-3 overall and 14-2 in the second half. ODU’s Sean Stowe came up with two saves, while Zach Biggs had four for UCF.
Hopkinson and Monarch senior defender Jason Gaylord (Kendall, NY.) were named to the Stihl Classic All-Tournament squad. William and Mary’s Chris Dunn was named the Tournament MVP. ODU returns to action Friday night when they host VMI at 7 p.m.
In the first game William and Mary’s Josh West put the Tribe up with a goal 3:26 into the match. The Bluejays tied the game seven minutes later on Marvin Iskra’s goal. Creighton took the lead in the second half on Sean Kim’s goal, but the tribe tied the match with nine minutes remaining as Albiston scored on an assist from Jackson Eskay. The gamewinner came at the 106.01 mark of the match in the
Second overtime period. W&M improves to 2-2-1 and Creighton falls to 4-1.
