NORFOLK, VA—Old Dominion University junior forward Rosario Villagra’s (Salta, Argentina) goal with 4:28 left in the first overtime lifted the eighth ranked Lady Monarchs (1-1) to a 2-1 victory over American (1-1) Sunday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.

After a scoreless first half, AU scored first, six minutes into the second half on a goal by Shelly Montgomery.  Seven minutes later, the Lady Monarchs got the equalizer off a corner by Christy Longacre with assists from Kelsey Smither (Suffolk, VA.) and Villagra.

In the overtime, Villagra got the ball about 30 yards out and drove to the box and fired the shot pass the keeper to win the match.

“The match was certainly exciting for the fans. A lot of goal scoring opportunities, unfortunately not quite enough goals for us in regulation,” said ODU Head Coach Andrew Griffiths. “Our Goal of the day was finishing and we had to work hard and we were finally able to get it done in overtime.”

ODU outshot AU, 22-7 as AU’s keeper Ashley Dalisera had 10 saves and Lady Monarch red-shirt sophomore keeper Megan Hept (Chesapeake, VA.) made five stops.

The Lady Monarchs return home next Friday to host second ranked Maryland at 5 p.m., the seventh ranked Virginia on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
