NORFOLK, VA—Sixth ranked Penn State rallied for three second half goals to defeat the eighth ranked Lady Monarchs, 3-1 Friday evening at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex in the season opener for both teams.
ODU took a 1-0 halftime lead as junior Kelsey Smither (Suffolk, VA.) dribbled through traffic and scored with a shot into the far right corner at the 14:09 mark.
In the second half, Penn State tied the match on Taylor Herald’s goal with 25 minutes left in the match. Two minutes later Brittany Grzywacz scored with an assist from Laura Gebhart off a corner to put Penn State in the lead, 2-1. The final goal came with seven minutes remaining on a goal by Ashtin Klingler from Laura Gebhart.
Penn State edged ODU 11-10 in shots. Lady Monarch sophomore Megan Hept had three saves on the day while PSU’s goalkeeper Kylie Licata had four.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday when they host American at 1 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
