NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University football completed their 15th day of practice Monday morning at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex Practice Field.

ODUSports.com is taking a closer look at this year’s team. Today we take a look at sophomore safety, Malique Johnson.

Why did you choose Old Dominion? It was close enough for my family to come watch me play and I really liked the coaches.

What is your major? Biology with a minor in exercise science

When did you start playing football? I was around 12-years-old. I played soccer before and I was so fast and always running into other kids so my parent’s friend suggested I play football. Since that first day on the field, I loved it and it just went from there.

What is one thing you anticipate entering Conference USA?

I anticipate seeing our progression as a team going from FCS to FBS. It will give us a chance to see where we were, how we progress and where we end up.

What is it like playing in front of a sold-out crowd at Foremen Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium? The feeling is great! Running out of the tunnel, seeing the student section, pointing at the fans, is an amazing feeling.

What is one thing most people do not know about being a safety?

A safety is the quarterback of the defense. The safety is telling the corner what to do, so if the corner is wrong, the safety is wrong. We all have to be on the same page.

Who is your role model? My dad is my role model for life situations and Sean Taylor and Mark Barron as players.

Favorite sport to watch other than football? Lacrosse

What sport would you play other than football? Lacrosse

What’s on your iPod? Rap, hip-hop, a few country songs and a little old school from my parents listening to it.

What is your favorite food? I have four favorite foods: chicken alfredo, steak, Scooby-Doo fruit snacks and blueberry muffins.

Something people do not know about you? I get pedicures. I think it is important for your feet to look nice.
