NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team will host cross-town rival, William and Mary on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex. Admission is FREE.
This will be the second and final exhibition game for the Lady Monarchs, as they defeated UMBC 1-0 on Monday. Against the Retrievers, ODU did not take long to find the back of the net. Just seven minutes into the first half, freshman Melanie Oakes centered the ball from the left side of the field into the box, where junior Jessie Klamut headed the ball into goal. Both Oakes and Klamut attended Cox High school in Virginia Beach.
Perhaps the story of the first Lady Monarchs’ exhibition game was their defense. The senior-oriented backline was just too much for UMBC to handle all game, as the Retrievers did not produce many opportunities to test ODU’s freshman goalkeeper, Meredith Lenox.
William and Mary women’s soccer team was selected to finish second in the Colonial Athletic Association’s Preseason Poll announced on Tuesday. The tribe has garnered back to back regular season titles in the CAA.
W&M returns 22 letter-winners and eight starters from last season’s team that posted a 14-5-1 record. The Tribe welcomes back three All-CAA players in seniors Audrey Barry and Dani Rutter as well as junior Emily Fredrikson. The lineup also features four players that earned CAA All-Rookie honors last season in sophomores Nicole Baxter, Caroline Casey, Leci Irvin and Barbara Platenberg.
Be sure to hang around campus on Sunday after the game, as the Old Dominion University men’s soccer team hosts Georgetown, who is this year’s No. 3 preseason ranked team in the country and was last year’s NCAA runner-up.
