SOFIA, Bulgaria – Kevin Beazley was defeated in the elimination round of the 96 kg Greco-Roman tournament of the Junior World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria on Tuesday afternoon. The rising redshirt freshman from Old Dominion University lost 7-0 to Faith Baskoy of Turkey.
Assistant wrestling coach, Alex Dolly explained, “It is really a great experience to go overseas and be able to wrestle in such a high-caliber tournament. Facing such stiff competition and working all throughout the summer is certainly going to pay off for Kevin. Being able to represent your country is quite an opportunity; this puts him one step closer to his goal of winning a national championship.”
Beazley advanced to the Junior Worlds by winning the 2013 Greco-Roman International Wrestling Federation (FILA) Junior World Team Trials in Stillwater, Okla. back in June.
According to international rules, Beazley did not get the opportunity to wrestle-back because Baskoy failed to make the finals. Instead, Baskoy fell to Musa Evloev of Russia; Evloev went on to win the gold medal. Baskoy ended up winning the bronze medal. Therefore, Baskoy was one match away from giving Beazley a chance to wrestle-back.
Structure of the International Tournament
In the elimination round, wrestlers are paired off and compete in matches until two victors emerge who will compete in the finals for first and second place. All of the wrestlers who lost to the two finalists, then have the chance to wrestle in what is called a ‘repechage round’. The repechage round begins with the wrestlers who lost to the two finalists at the lowest level of competition in the elimination round. The matches are paired off by the wrestlers who lost to one finalist and the wrestlers who lost to the other. The two wrestlers who win after every level of competition are the victors of the repechage round.
In the finals, the two victors of the elimination round compete for first and second place.
After the finals match, the awards ceremony will take place. The first place and second place wrestlers will receive a gold and silver medal, respectively. The two repechage round winners will each be awarded third place with a bronze medal. The two wrestlers who lost in the finals for the third place are awarded fifth place. From seventh place down, the wrestlers are ranked according to the classification points earned for their victories or losses.
