NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team defeated UMBC by a score of 1-0 in the first exhibition match of the 2013 season at the ODU Soccer Complex.
Seven minutes into the first half, freshman Melanie Oakes sent a cross from the left side of the field into the center of the box, in which Jessie Klamut headed into the back of the net.
Old Dominion’s defense was stout throughout the entirety of the game, only allowing two UMBC shots in the first half and three in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper, Meredith Lenox played the whole game for the Lady Monarchs.
ODU tallied a total of 10 shots on the day, as the tandem of Retriever’ goalkeepers saved four shots in all. The corner kick count was even at two a piece for the match.
The Lady Monarchs will be back in action Sunday, August 18 at 2 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex for their second and final exhibition match against William and Mary. The Old Dominion University men’s soccer team will also take the pitch on Sunday at 7 p.m., as they host their first exhibition match against Georgetown.
