SPARTANBURG, SC--The ODU Baseball Monarchs scored five runs in the fifth inning and defeated Wofford, 8-1 Saturday afternoon at Russell King Field to finish the season at 30-24.
The Monarchs broke open a scoreless contest in the fifth as Tyler Urps led off with a triple and came home on freshman Connor Myers (Middletown, MD.) double. Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.) doubled to bring home Myers for a 2-0 ODU lead.
Designated hitter Ben Slaton (Magnolia, MS.) singled in Eldridge and Austin McGowan (Midlothian, VA.)brought home sophomore catcher Michael Perez with a single for a 4-0 lead. Junior third baseman Jordan Negrini (Hawaii) finished the scoring in that frame with a single to plate Slaton.
In the seventh inning, Slaton tripled and came home on McGowan's sacrifice fly for a 6-0 lead. The Monarchs added two more in the eighth on an RBI double by Michael Perez which brought home Brian Bashara (Norfolk, VA.). Perez later scored on a pass ball for the 8-1 lead.
Connor Myers led ODU with three hits on the day, followed by Ben Slaton with two. Austin McGowan Knocked in two runs for ODU.
Junior righthander Dean Ali picked up with win for the Monarchs, his fourth of the season to run his record to 4-3.
Ben Verlander ended the season with a .367 batting average, 11 homers, 46 runs scored, 37 RBI and 13 stolen bases. P.J. Higgins hit .336,Ben Slaton finished at .312 with three homers and 35 RBI and Connor Myers finished at .300. Josh Eldridge hit .297 and led the team with 50 RBI. Both Eldridge and Michael Perezhit six homers. As a team, ODU belted 40.
Andy Roberts finished with a 5-3 record and a 2.92 ERA, while Dean Ali was 4-3 witha 3.02 ERA and Ryan Yarbrough finished at 4-4 with a 3.27 ERA. ODU's team ERA was4.09.
