Slow Start Dooms ODU in 8-4 Loss to Drexel

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's lacrosse team was not able to overcome a slow offensive start on Sunday afternoon, as they were double up by Drexel the L.R. Hill Sports Complex, 8-4.

Old Dominion (3-10, 1-2) was held scoreless for the first 43 minutes of the game as senior attacker Meredith Rogers scored the first goal of the game for ODU on a feed from junior defender Kallie McCormick at the 16:45 mark in the second half. The Lady Monarchs scored the final four goals of the game, but ran out of time while holding Drexel (9-3, 2-0) scoreless over that period.

The Dragons held a 5-0 advantage at halftime and scored three goals in three minutes to begin the second half to go in front 8-0 before the Lady Monarchs clamped down defensively and did not allow a goal the rest of the way. Amanda Norcini had a pair of goals and six other Drexel players scored. In goal, Teresha Bradley had 13 saves and scooped up four groundballs.

ODU held the 24-21 advantage in shots while groundballs were even at 18. The Dragons had an 8-6 edge in draw controls while each team committed 12 turnovers. The Lady Monarchs were just 2-for-10 on free position attempts while Drexel was 1-for-3.

Also scoring for Old Dominion was freshman midfielder Mary Margaret McCaleb on a free position attempt with her second career goal, sophomore midfielder Christina Rea and sophomore attacker Jess Liberty on a free position attempt. Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hayde has seven saves while senior defender Alexandra Burns had a pair of caused turnovers and draw controls.

Old Dominion hits the road for three of their final four games of the season starting on Friday when they visit Delaware at 5 p.m.
