NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 14 Old Dominion University coed sailing team placed fourth at the Greater New York Dinghy Regatta in Throggs Neck, N.Y. and sixth in the Prosser Trophy/MAISA Team Race in Geneva, N.Y. over the weekend.
Old Dominion earned fourth place with 73 points in the 18-team field at the Greater New York Dinghy Regatta. Brown (25) won the event followed by Penn (48) and Fordham (54). In the A-Division race, junior skipper Jake Spracher and sophomore crew Colin Voigt finished seventh in the B-Division race with 41 points.
Trying to qualify for team race nationals, the Monarchs fell short at the Prosser Trophy race as they went 6-8 and tied for fifth place in the eight-team field with just the top four teams advancing on. The ODU skippers were seniors Dillon Paiva and Zachary Runci and freshman Chloe Constants, Julia Wiesner and Jill Fattibene. Georgetown, St. Mary’s, Navy and Hobart and William Smith advanced to nationals.
“The team really did work hard,” said head coach Mitch Brindley. “Unfortunately, we were just on the wrong side of a few races. We are shifting gears now and looking forward to the coed dinghy conference championships this coming weekend.”
Old Dominion will take part in three events next weekend in the America Trophy Race in Annapolis, Md. and the MAISA Open in Kings Point, N.Y. while the Lady Monarchs head to New London, Conn. for the Emily Wick.
