NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s lacrosse dropped their first CAA game in over a month on Friday night with a 15-6 setback to Hofstra at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
A tightly contested, low scoring game prevailed for much of the first half as the teams were tied at three with five minutes until halftime. Hofstra (7-4, 1-0) then seized control of the game by scoring two goals in the final 30 seconds of the first half and then first six consecutive goals to start the second half while holding Old Dominion (3-9, 1-1) scoreless for over 30 minutes.
Junior attacker Emily Austerberry scored one of her two first half goals just 37 seconds into the game to give the Lady Monarchs a quick 1-0 advantage. The Pride eventually responded with an equalizer midway through the first half and then took a 2-1 lead before ODU responded with back-to-back goals from sophomore midfielder Christina Rea and Austerberry to take a 3-2 lead. Hofstra then scored the final three goals of the first half to take a 5-3 lead into intermission and nine unanswered goals overall in the game to take command.
The Lady Monarchs were unable to get on the board until the 7:35 mark when sophomore midfielder Ashmore Standing scored one of her two second half goals to increase her team-leading season goal total to 27 while freshman midfielder Nicole Bellini scored her third goal of the season late in the second half.
Leading the attack for Hofstra was Brittain Altomare and Taylor Albright who each scored three times while Julia Riemer added two goals and April Ianetta had a pair of assists. In total, 10 different Hofstra players scored in the game while Kelsey Gregerson gathered eight saves in goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hayde had 13 saves for the Lady Monarchs along with a game-high six groundballs. Senior Alexandra Burns and junior Kallie McCormick each caused three turnovers while senior Carolyn Burns registered her first career assist on Friday night.
