NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's lacrosse team rounds out their home swing against a pair of CAA foes this weekend at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex when they face Hofstra on Friday at 7 p.m. and Drexel on Sundayat 1 p.m.
The first 200 fans to the game on Sunday against Drexel will get a free ODU LAX tank top as all fans will be treated to a free hot dog courtesy of Aramark.
Old Dominion (3-8, 1-0) dropped a pair of close contests at home last week, falling to No. 9 Virginia on Wednesday, 16-12, and to Oregon on Saturday, 10-9. The Lady Monarchs open April against CAA foes Hofstra and Drexel.
Sophomore midfielder Emily Austerberry has added 20 goals and four assists. Sophomore midfielder Christina Rea leads the team with 24 draws in addition to scoring 19 goals while senior attacker Meredith Rogers has scored 11 goals and added a team-high seven assists. Defensively, junior Kallie McCormick has caused 15 turnovers and scooped up 26 groundballs while senior Alexandra Burns has 22 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeeper Karen Hayde has 89 saves while allowing 164 goals.
Hofstra (6-4, 0-0) has won two of their last three games after dropping three straight contests to begin March. The Pride are coming off a heartbreaking 11-10 overtime loss at Ohio State last Saturday. HU has wins over New Hampshire, Fairfield, Colgate, Marist, Quinnipiac and Temple with losses to No. 1 Maryland, Yale and Rutgers.
Offensively, sophomore attacker Brittain Altomare is the Pride’s top scoring threat as leads Hofstra in goals (20), assists (20) and points (40), while also contributing 16 draw controls, 11 ground balls and six caused turnovers. Sophomore defender April Iannetta leads HU in draw controls (31) and caused turnovers (20), while ranking second in ground balls (20). In goal, sophomore Kelsey Gregerson has allowed 99 goals while collecting 69 saves. Senior midfielder Casey Kellogg is the younger sister of ODU assistant coach Ashley Kellogg.
Drexel (7-3, 0-0) plays at William and Mary on Friday night and comes in having dropped three of their last five games after starting the season off 5-0. The Dragons started the year off with wins over George Washington, LaSalle, No. 11 Penn, Saint Joseph's and Vanderbilt. DU then dropped a contest to UMBC, Louisville and Penn State with additional wins over Colgate and UC Davis in their last game last Saturday.
The Dragons are led by senior attacker Alyse Maiden who has 19 goals and 12 assists while senior midfielder Kelli Joran has a team-best 23 goals and 31 draw controls. Defensively, junior midfielder Amanda Norcini and senior midfielder Kristi Kopenhaver have each caused 11 turnovers while scooping up 10 groundballs. Kopenhaver adds 34 draws as well. In goal, sophomore Theresa Bradley has seen the majority of the action allowing 73 goals and posting 55 saves.
Hofstra leads the all-time series with ODU, 7-5. The two teams have played close games in each of the past two seasons as HU edged ODU in Hempstead last year, 9-8, while ODU downed the Pride in 2011 in Norfolk, 6-4. Drexel holds a 6-5 advantage in the all-time series with the Lady Monarchs. The Dragons won in a rainy season finale a year ago in Philadelphia, 10-4, while ODU edged DU in Norfolk in 2011, 9-8.
