ODU Sweeps W&M Behind Yarbrough's Four-Hit Shutout

NORFOLK, VA--ODU junior lefthander Ryan Yarbrough tossed a four-hit complete game shutout to lead the Monarchs of Old Dominion (21-18/11-10) to a 1-0 victory over William and Mary (26-16/9-6) Sunday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex, giving ODU the series sweep.

Yarbrough struckout four, walked just two on the day. At one stretch, he retired 17 Tribe batters in a row before a one out single in the ninth by Ryan Lindemuth. With Tribe runners on first and second and one out in the ninth, Yarbrough got Jonathan Sarty to fly out to right and Jackson Shaver to fly out to left to end the game.

The game's lone run came in the first inning as Ben Verlander led off with a single, was sacrifice to second by Josh Eldridge and then stole third base. Monarch firstbaseman Josiah Burney singled Verlander home with two outs.

Besides the ninth, the Tribe had the bases loaded in the third with two outs, but Yarbrough struck out Ryan Hissey to end the threat.

W&M's starter Jason Inghram pitched eight innings allowing seven hits, three walks and striking out eight in the loss.

The Monarchs return to action Tuesday night in the "Key Dog -Strikeout Cancer Classic" at Hampton's War Memorial Stadium against VCU. Game time is 7 p.m., then return home Wednesday night to host Liberty at 6 p.m.
