ODU Falls at Richmond, 23-7

RICHMOND, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s lacrosse team fell on Tuesday evening at Robins Stadium in wet and cold conditions to Richmond, 23-7.

The first half was a battle of streaks as Old Dominion (1-4) started out with back-to-back goals from sophomore midfielder Christina Rea. Richmond (2-5) then followed with nine consecutive goals over the next 15 minutes. The Lady Monarchs got three straight goals then moving in towards halftime from junior attacker Emily Austerberry, freshman attacker Rachel Shaw and senior attacker Meredith Rogers. The Spiders would score four quick goals late in the first half to take a 13-5 lead at halftime.

The Spiders took control in the second half, outscoring the Lady Monarchs, 10-2. Sophomore midfielder Ashmore Standing scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season while contributing to Roger’s second goal of the game to cap the ODU scoring.

Richmond had a 32-24 shot advantage and 6-for-7 on free position attempts. The Spiders also had narrow advantages in draws (18-14) and groundballs (18-17). ODU was just 1-for-6 on free position attempts and 6-for-12 on clear attempts.

For the Spiders, Kara Moschetti, Jennifer Zoltoski and Sam Stevenson each scored three goals in the first half. Moschetti finished with five while Stevenson and Zoltoski each finished with four goals apiece. Emily Boyce finished with 13 saves in goal.

Rea and Rogers each had two goals to pace ODU while Standing scored a goal and registered an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hayde collected four saves. Sophomore defender Abby Johansen collected three groundballs and forced a pair of turnovers.

Old Dominion returns home on Saturday for four of their next six contests beginning with American University at 1 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
