NORFOLK, VA-- UNC Wilmington's lefthander Christian MacDonald allowed one run over 7.1 innings and Corey Dick added four hits, including a home run, to lead the Seahawks (20-8/7-1) to an 8-1 victory over Old Dominion (13-13/4-8) and the series sweep.
The Monarchs scored in the bottom of the first inning after third baseman Jordan Negrini (Kihei,HI) doubled, Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.) was hit with a pitch and Ben Verlander (Maidens, VA.) walked to load the bases. Freshman designated hitter Alex Kowalczyk's (Downingtown, PA.) groundout brought home Negrini from third to tie the game at 1-1.
The Seahawks scored two in the third on RBI's from Michael Bass and Corey Dick. They then added three more in the fourth on RBI's from Terence Connelly, Louis Renvill and Hunter Ridge.
UNCW's MacDonald (3-0) allowed five hits and walked three while recording 14 outs on 13 ground balls before leaving in the eighth inning.
Corey Dick, who finished 4-for-5, knocked in three runs and belted his fourth homer of the season in the eighth inning. Luis Renvill added two hits for UNCW.
Jordan Negrini led the Monarchs with two hits, while Josh Eldridge, Ben Verlander, freshman Josiah Burney (Gloucester, VA.) each had one hit.
The Monarchs return to Wednesday night on the road at Campbell, then travel to JMU for a three game series in Harrisonburg beginning Friday.
