Fifth Place Finish in ODU Open Headlines Weekend for Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – A fifth place finish out of 19 teams in the ODU Open headlined a busy weekend for the No. 12 Old Dominion University coed sailing team who also placed sixth at the Charleston Women’s Invite and ninth in the Graham Hall Team Race in Annapolis.

At the ODU Open, conditions were cold but favorable for sailing on both days as the Monarchs placed fifth with 136 points in the 19-team event as Navy captured the title with 78 points. In the A-Division race, ODU’s tandem of junior skipper Jake Spracher and freshman crew Katelyn Talley finished seventh with 75 points.

Down in Charleston, S.C., with warmer winds, the Lady Monarchs took sixth at the Charleston Women’s competition with a score of 370. Host College of Charleston won the event with 235 points. For ODU’s A-Division team, sophomore skipper Andrea Luna and junior crew Alexa Cavalieri placed fifth with 145 points while junior skipper Rachel Austin and freshman crew Dillon Paiva, Zachary Runci and Chloe Constants, Julia Wiesner and Jill Fattibene. No. 2 College of Charleston won the event after posting a record of 20-2 followed by No. 8 St. Mary’s (17-5) and No. 1 Georgetown (17-6).

The Lady Monarchs head to the Navy Spring Women’s Open in Annapolis next weekend while the Monarchs head to the St. Mary’s Team Race.
