NORFOLK, VA--UNC Wilmington's Mat Batts pitched a complete game shutout, scattering three hits to defeat Old Dominion, Friday evening in a duel between to the CAA's top pitchers on Military Appreciation night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

The game's lone run came in the second inning when the Seahawks Luke Dunlap doubled and later scored on Corey Dick's single.

UNCW improved to 18-8 overall and 5-1 in the CAA. ODU falls to 13-11 overall and4-6 in the CAA.

The Monarchs threatened in the sixth after junior second baseman Brian Bashara (Norfolk, VA.) led off with a double to center and freshman centerfielder Conner Myers( Middletown, MD.) followed with a walk, but were left stranded. In the seventh inning leftfielder Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.) had a one out single. He went to second on a groundout and advanced to third on a wild pitch with two outs, but did not score.

Batts (4-1) walked only two and struckout eight to lower his ERA to 2.47. ODU's junior righthander Dean Ali (Chesapeake, VA.) pitched eight innings, with just one walk and five strikeouts to lower his ERA to 1.98.

Corey Dick led UNCW with two hits, while Josh Eldridge had two of ODU's three hits on the night.

Game two of the CAA series is Saturday at 3:05 p.m., and will be broadcast live on Star1310 AM ODU Director of Broadcasting Ted Alexander and Doug Ripley.
