NORFOLK, Va. – One goal separated the Old Dominion University women’s lacrosse team from No. 9 Virginia at halftime, as the Cavaliers were able to use a strong start to the second half and hold on late for a 16-12 win at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex on Wednesday night.
A back-and-forth affair in the first half that saw Virginia (6-5) come out of the gate quickly and take a 3-1 lead that would then swing the way of Old Dominion (3-7), who scored five of the next seven goals to take a lead at 6-5 late in the first half. The Cavaliers scored three of the final four goals of the half to take a slim 8-7 advantage into halftime.
Virginia came out of the game hot to begin the second half, scoring six unanswered goals to go ahead 14-7 before the Lady Monarchs were finally able to get on the board with 8:10 remaining. ODU scored five of the final seven goals of the game but simply ran out of time in their effort to come back on UVA.
Sophomore midfielder Christina Rea led all scorers with five goals, making it the second time this season she has accomplished that feat and the fourth time in 10 games this season that an ODU player has registered five goals in a game. Freshman midfielder Rachel Shaw, sophomore midfielder Ashmore Standing and junior attacker Emily Austerberry each scored twice for the Lady Monarchs with Shaw adding a pair of assists. Sophomore goalkeeper tallied nine saves and five groundballs.
The UVA attack was well balanced with Ashlee Warner, Casey Bocklet, Courtney Swan and Kelly Boyd each scoring three times. Bocklet and Warner also both had a pair of assists. In goal, Liz Colgan snatched up four groundballs and made 13 saves.
Virginia was able to capitalize most of the evening off draw controls, as they held a 21-9 edge in that department. The Cavaliers also scored three goals while ODU was down a player and went 5-for-8 on free position attempts. Old Dominion had just seven turnovers compared to UVA’s 14 and held a slim 20-18 advantage in groundballs. Both teams registered 33 shots.
The Lady Monarchs continue their home stretch on Saturday as they host Oregon at 11 a.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
