Monarchs Rally With Four In Ninth To Beat Charleston Southern, 4-3

NORFOLK, VA--Senior pinch hitter Austin McGowan's (Midlothian, VA.) two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth capped a four-run rally as the ODU Monarchs (13-10) defeated Charleston Southern, 4-3 at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex Tuesday afternoon.

The Buccaneers broke up a scoreless duel in the eighth inning on a Drew Woodall single which plated Alex Tomasovich for a 1-0 CSU lead. The Bucs added two more runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run, two out single by Tomasovich, scoring Robbie Streett and pinch hitter Austin Hicks.

In the bottom of the ninth ODU freshman pinch hitter Joey Burney (Gloucester, VA.) loaded the bases after being hit with a pitch. After a pitching change, Jordan Negrini (Kihei,HI.) singled in Higgins for the Monarchs first run.

Junior shortstop Austin McGowan then singled up the middle to score pinch runner Jordan Negrini with the game winner.

Burney led ODU with two hits, while Alex Tomasovich and Drew Woodall had two hits each for Charleston Southern.

ODU freshman lefthander Jake Josephs (Fairfax Station, VA.) started the game and pitched five scoreless innings with just one hit and four strikeouts.

The Monarchs return to CAA play this weekend when they host CAA co-leader UNC Wilmington in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. Friday's game is military night as all active and retired Military will be admitted for only $3. T-shirts will also be given away to the first 50 spectators to enterthe stadium.
