BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s lacrosse team suffered a 16-8 setback to Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Field.

Freshman attacker Rachel Shaw scored a career-high three goals and five Lady Monarchs scored on the day but Virginia Tech (6-4) proved to be too much for Old Dominion (3-6) as they won their fifth straight in the series.

The two teams traded goals to start things off as the Hokies’ Julia Heaps scored five minutes in. Five minutes later, Shaw tied the game on a free position attempt. Virginia Tech then went on a 7-0 run to take command. Junior defender Kallie McCormick scored just before half on a feed from sophomore midfielder Ashmore Standing as the Hokies took an 8-2 advantage into halftime.

Shaw would open the second half with a goal for Old Dominion, but that’s as close as the Lady Monarchs would get. The Hokies were able to salt the game away with an even eight goals in each half.

Virginia Tech had a 28-17 advantage in shots and scooped up 21 groundballs to ODU’s 17. The Lady Monarchs meanwhile had 22 turnovers to Virginia Tech’s 15. On free position attempts, ODU was just 1-for-6 while VT was 3-for-3.

Also scoring for ODU on Saturday was Standing, junior attacker Emily Austerberry, senior attacker Meredith Rogers and sophomore attacker Jess Liberty. Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hayde gathered eight saves and four groundballs.

For the Hokies, Megan Will led the way with four goals and an assist while Meg Bartley scored three goals and collected an assist. Libby Resebro and Brooke Martin also each scored twice. In goal, Alex Gale tallied eight saves.

Old Dominion begins a four-game home stretch starting Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Virginia at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
