PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Old Dominion University women’s lacrosse team jumped out to a commanding second half lead and held on late to defeat Saint Joseph’s on Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field, 9-7.

The Lady Monarchs jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game, forcing a Saint Joseph’s (5-3) timeout, after a pair of goals from senior midfielder Jordynn Collins and sophomore midfielder Ashmore Standing.

The Hawks would get on the board midway through the first half but goals by sophomore midfielder Christina Rea and junior attacker Emily Austerberry would bump the lead up to 6-1. SJU got a pair of goals late in the first half as ODU took a 6-3 lead into intermission.

Old Dominion (3-4) came out of the gate hot in the second half and scored the first three goals as Austeberry twice found the net and Rea scored her second free position goal of the game to push the lead up to 9-2.

The Hawks then methodically climbed back, scoring five unanswered goals to end the game, but ran out of time as the Lady Monarch defense held strong late to allow ODU to move to 6-0 all time against Saint Joseph’s.

ODU sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hayde tallied 13 saves and two groundballs while Austerberry led the way offensively with three goals and an assist. Rea, Standing and Collins each scored twice while junior attacker Courtney Clough and senior attacker Meredith Rogers each registered an assist.

For the Hawks, Julia Falcone scored a game-high four goals while Genevieve Giblin posted saves in goal for Saint Joseph’s.

Old Dominion returns home for five of their next six games beginning Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Longwood at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
