ODU Still in First Place After Day Two at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. – The Old Dominion University men’s golf team is currently tied for first place after the second of three days at the 2013 Pinehurst Intercollegiate tournament.

The Monarchs came into day two with a five stoke lead, after shooting a round-one best score of 286 (+2). On Monday, Old Dominion turned in a team total of 313, which was the fifth best score at Pinehurst for round two. Combined, ODU has now shot a 599 as a team for the two days.

Virginia Commonwealth University shot a team best score for round two of 308. VCU started day two in a tie for second, but with their performance today they are now in a tie for first place with Old Dominion.

Ball State and UNCG are currently tied for third and are four strokes back of the Monarchs and the Rams. Rounding out the top five, Richmond now has a two day total of 606 and remains seven strokes behind the lead.

Thomas Wilde shot a 76 and led the Monarchs in the second day of action. Ashton Newman shot a 79 today and is now tied for eighth place with his teammate, Wilde. Wilde and Newman are six shots back from the current leader, Ball State’s Tyler Merkel. Merkel handed-in a 73 today, which was the best individual score of round two.
