Urps, Verlander Lead Rout of Temple, 9-2

NORFOLK, Va. - Ben Verlander and Tyler Urps had three hits apiece and Dean Ali pitched six strong innings to lead Old Dominion University baseball to a 9-2 win over Temple Friday evening at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

After going scoreless the first three innings, the Monarchs exploded for five runs in the fourth inning. Jordan Negrini started the inning with a bunt single, stole second and scored on a Verlander single for the 1-0 ODU lead. P.J. Higgins had an RBI groundout while Urps followed with a suicide squeeze that scored Verlander. Patrick Kane followed with an RBI groundout while Conner Myers rounded out the five-run inning with an RBI single.

ODU tacked on three more runs in the fifth as Michael Perez belted a two-run double to left center and Urps singled to score Perez.

Temple scored a run in the fifth but Verlander led off the seventh with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.

Ali allowed just four hits and one run in six innings while Mike Ney and Mitch Moynihan closed out the game.

Henry Knabe led the Temple offense with two hits.

The two teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
