JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Old Dominion University women's lacrosse team fell on Saturday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field to Jacksonville, 14-4.
Things started off well for the Lady Monarchs as junior attacker Emily Austerberry scored the contest's first goal just over five minutes in but Jacksonville (4-2) responded with four consecutive goals, two each by Niki Erdely and Brit Orashen, over the next 15 minutes to take a 4-1 lead. Sophomore midfielder Christina Rea scored the last goal of the half to cut the lead down to 4-2.
The Dolphins were once again able to take control coming out of half as they scored five straight goals in the first 15 minutes to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Old Dominion (1-3) then got a pair of goals behind senior midfielder and team co-captain Jordynn Collins on a free position attempt and Austerberry's second goal of the game on a feed from senior Meredith Rogers but could get no closer as JU scored the final five goals of the game win it, 14-4.
The Lady Monarchs were able to take a 13-7 advantage in draw controls in the contest but were overmatched in shots by JU, 44-13. The Dolphins also had a 44-17 advantage in ground balls and caused 19 of ODU's 23 turnovers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hayde collected a season-high 14 saves while Rea led the team with four draws. Senior defender Carolyn Burns scooped a team-high four groundballs.
For JU, Orashen and Morgan Derner each had three goals to power the offense while Erdely had a game-high six groundballs. Karli Tobin had nine saves in goal for the Dolphins.
Old Dominion is back in action on the road on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when they travel to the University of Richmond.
