NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball used a strong second half on Sunday afternoon at the Ted Constant Convocation Center to rally past UNC Wilmington, 62-55.
Down 34-26 at half, the Lady Monarchs were able to overcome a sluggish start behind the strong play of sophomore Shae Kelley who scored a game-high 19 points and collected a career-high 17 rebounds to go with three steals, three blocks and two assists. She had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the second half as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season and third in the past four games.
The Lady Monarchs took their first lead since early in the first half with 8:31 to play on a free throw from Kelley. ODU and UNCW would then battle back and forth as the score alternated five times after half with two ties in that span before Old Dominion took the lead for good with 5:32 to play on a jumper by Kelley.
Old Dominion (15-6, 6-3) clamped down defensively in the second half, holding UNC Wilmington (2-17, 1-7) to just 21 points after halftime and turning them over 20 times in the game, scoring 20 points off those miscues.
Senior Jackie Cook picked up her 15th double-digit scoring performance of the season and 38th her career as she scored 13 points to go with seven rebounds, two steals, a block and an assist. Freshman Galaisha Goodhope matched her career-high with four steals in 26 minutes of action as she scored eight points and gathered three rebounds.
ODU shot 31.3 percent in the game (20-64) and just 29 percent in the first half while UNCW was at 35.2 percent for the contest (19-54). The Lady Monarchs outrebounded the Seahawks, 46-42, and took advantage of a thin UNCW bench by outscoring them, 19-6.
Karneisha Garrett corralled a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Seahawks while Tawanna Lee and Dana Brown each added 13 for UNCW.
