Lady Monarchs Doubled Up by Blue Jays, 20-10

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Old Dominion University lacrosse team fell in their season-opener on Saturday afternoon at No. 19 Johns Hopkins, 20-10, at Homewood Field.

The Blue Jays (1-0) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but Old Dominion (0-1) was able to claw back late in the first half and closed the gap to 5-3 after sophomore midfielder Christina Rea scored with 5:05 to halftime but JHU would score the last three goals of the half to take an 8-3 lead into intermission.

After freshman midfielder Nicole Bellini score the first goal of the second half on a free position attempt, Johns Hopkins took control of the game, scoring nine unanswered goals to take a commanding 17-4 advantage with 13:59 left to play.

The Lady Monarchs were led by sophomore midfielder Ashmore Standing who scored a team-high three goals, the first of her ODU career, and grabbed four groundballs while causing a turnover. Bellini scored a pair of goals and earned a draw control. Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hayde collected seven saves for ODU.

Sammy Cermack led the Blue Jay attack with four goals and five draw controls while Taylor D'Amore scored three goals and registered a game-high five assists to go with six draw controls. In goal, Cosette Larash gathered eight saves for JHU.

JHU had a 39-21 advantage in shots in the game and dominated draw controls, 26-6. ODU forced the Blue Jays into 21 turnovers while each team scooped up 21 ground balls. ODU was 3-for-4 in free position attempts while JHU was 5-for-6.

Old Dominion returns to action at Louisville on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m.
