NORFOLK, Va. - A pair of Old Dominion University men's tennis doubles teams are ranked in the top-35 in the first Intercollegiate Athletic Association (ITA) Poll of the 2013 season. The team of Carlos Lopez Villa and Can Cetinel is ranked No. 23 while Wesley Barrett and Tim Schweig are No. 34.
"It's great to see two of our doubles teams get a national ranking heading into the season. Our guys have worked extremely hard and I am happy to see them get this well deserved recognition," ODU Head Coach Aljosa Piric said. "We will use this as a building block going forward and will do our best to keep improving as a team."
Lopez Villa had an outstanding fall for the Monarchs defeating three ranked players. He looks to follow his stellar freshman campaign when he finished the year with a 13-8 singles mark and a combined 20-4 in doubles competition. He earned third-team honors in singles and second-team All-CAA in doubles.
Cetinel is also set to start his sophomore season with ODU and made tremendous strides in the fall. He went 9-12 in singles as a rookie and won seven matches in doubles.
As a sophomore last season Barrett led all Monarchs with a 16-7 singles record and went 7-7 in doubles.
A freshman, Schweig enjoyed a nice first fall in Norfolk, as he advanced to the finals at the Wake Forest Invitational.
The Monarchs open the 2013 season at Georgia Tech on Jan. 18 before hosting Norfolk State in the home opener Jan. 20 at 1 p.m.
