WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team scored a season-high 42 first half points and improved to 5-0 this season on the road on Thursday night at Trask Coliseum with a 74-50 victory over UNC Wilmington.
The win improved ODU to 12-4 overall, surpassing their win total from a season ago, as the Lady Monarchs improve to 3-1 in CAA play. Thursday was the 11th double-digit victory for Old Dominion this season as a well-balanced scoring attack saw 11 players on the travel roster get into the game and score.
The ODU bench outscored UNC Wilmington, 38-9, and was led by freshman LaQuanda Younger who scored a career and game-high 12 points as she connected on four first half three-pointers that sparked the Lady Monarchs on a 24-12 run to end the half and take a 42-28 lead into break.
UNC Wilmington (2-13, 1-3) closed to within nine points five minutes into the second half but could get no closer as ODU used a balanced scoring attack throughout the evening to overwhelm the Seahawks. ODU shot 45.9 percent (16-33) for the game and 84.6 percent (11-13) at the free throw line while converting seven three-pointers in the game and had a 16-3 advantage in second chance points.
The Lady Monarchs outrebounded the Seahawks, 44-32, behind 10 rebounds from sophomore Shae Kelley who recorded her fourth double-digit rebounding game this season while adding five points and an assist. Senior Jackie Cook scored in double figures for the 11th time in 16 games this season as she added 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals while redshirt senior Mairi Buchan was the third Lady Monarch to score in double digits with 10 points and two rebounds.
ODU was able to clamp down defensively as well as they held UNCW to just 33.3 percent from the field (18-54) and 26.3 percent (5-19) from behind the arc while forcing 15 Seahawk turnovers. The CAA's leader and one of the top NCAA rebounders in the country, Karneshia Garrett, was held to 11 points and nine rebounds. Jessica Freeman added 11 points, four rebounds and four assists for UNCW.
Old Dominion continues their road swing with a 2 p.m. tip on Sunday at Hofstra. Live stats, audio and video will be available.
