NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball hits the road for three of their next four games beginning Thursday with a trip to UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.
MIDWAY POINT
The Lady Monarchs are at the midpoint of their 2012-13 schedule with an 11-4 record. That is the best record for ODU through 15 games since the 2007-08 season when they went 31-5 and made a trip to the Sweet 16. Old Dominion has already matched their win total from a season ago with 11 victories.
ROAD TESTS
Old Dominion begins a swing where three of their next four games are on the road starting on Thursday at UNC Wilmington. The Lady Monarchs are 4-0 this season on the road with wins at Virginia Tech, Maryland Eastern Shore, UNLV and Georgia State.
AMONG THE NATION'S BEST
Out of 343 teams, ODU ranks in the top 50 nationally in the following categories: #18 in Turnover Margin (6.00), #27 in 3-PT FG% Defense (.256), #38 in FG % Defense (.349), #45 in Scoring Defense (55.1 ppg) and #49 in Steal Per Game (11.3).
The Lady Monarchs have forced 349 turnovers in 15 games this year (23.3 per game).
LEAGUE LEADERS
The Lady Monarchs are ranked atop the CAA in the following categories per game entering league play: Turnover Margin (+6.00) while ranking second in Scoring Margin (+10.1), Blocked Shots (4.2) and Assist/Turnover Ratio (0.9).
SERIES HISTORY
Thursday's meeting will be the 45th meeting all-time between ODU and UNCW. The two teams fist met in 1992 with the Lady Monarchs holding a 43-1 advantage in the series. UNCW's first ever win over ODU came just last season in Norfolk, 76-54. ODU is 19-0 all-time in meetings in Wilmington.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
The Seahawks dropped their game on Sunday at home to Drexel, 64-51. Last week, UNCW snapped their eight-game losing streak with a 61-52 victory at William & Mary. UNCW's other win the season came against North Carolina Central on Nov. 28, 59-45. ODU defeated NC Central on Dec. 7, 59-33.
Redshirt junior guard Jessica Freeman and sophomore guard Kelva Atkins lead the Seahawks in scoring at 10.6 points per game while senior forward Karneshia Garrett averages 10.9 rebounds per contest to go along with 8.2 points per game.
Head Coach Adell Harris is in her first season as the head of the UNCW program. The Seahawks return three starters and seven letterwinners from last season's squad that posted 20 victories and made its second straight appearance in the Postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament.
In a vote of the league's coaches, UNC Wilmington was picked to finish seventh in the league . The Seahawks finished 20-13 overall last season and 11-7 in the CAA.
LAST TIME OUT
ODU fell to Delaware on Jan. 13 in a battle of the team with the best record in the CAA at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, 63-46.
The Blue Hens were able to take advantage on the boards with a 59-35 rebounding margin, including 22 offensive rebounds.
Shae Kelley recorded her third career double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to go along with three steals and an assist but the Lady Monarchs were held to a season-low 27 percent from the floor (17-63).
Delaware) won their 21st consecutive CAA regular season contest dating back to 2011. Unanimous preseason All-American and reigning CAA Player of the Year Elena Delle Donne scored a game-high 28 points to go along with 13 rebounds, five blocks, two steals and an assist.
Ashley Betz-White added 13 points, two assists and a steal for ODU while Michelle Brandao recorded her first career points as a Lady Monarchs with five points in the first half. The Lady Monarchs forced 18 Blue Hen turnovers while committing just 10. The ODU bench outscored Delaware, 14-4, while the Blue Hens held the advantage in points in the paint, 31-22.
GOODHOPE NAMED CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Galaisha Goodhope was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 7 after the freshman averaged 14.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in 20 minutes per contest off the bench as she collected three assists, two steals and shot .429 (9-for-21) from the field against Pittsburgh and Georgia State. In addition, she shot .714 (10-for-14) from the free throw line for the week.
Goodhope (set a career-high with 21 points on Sunday, 19 of which came in the second half as she helped spur the Lady Monarchs on a 42-16 run to end the game after they trailed Georgia State by 20 points with 13:21 in the second half.
In that 72-66 comeback win for Old Dominion, Goodhope was 6-for-11 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free throw line in just 18 minutes of action while grabbing five rebounds, a steal and registering an assist.
ATOP THE CAA IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION
Old Dominion finished tied for the best non-conference record in the league at 9-3 along with Delaware.
Both the nine non-conference wins and the 9-3 start are bests for ODU since the 2007- 08 season when they went to the Sweet 16 with a record of 31-5.
BAREFOOT PRINTS
ODU head coach Karen Barefoot enters her 14th year as a head coach in 2012-13 and 200 plus wins in her career as she leads the Lady Monarch program in year two. As head coach at the Apprentice School in 2001, she led the Builders to a National Championship in the school's first ever women's sport while taking Lenoir-Rhyne the NCAA Tournament in the 2002-03 season. In 2010-11 while at Elon, she led the Phoenix to the WBI, the schools first ever women's basketball tournament appearance. The last time that ODU made the NCAA Tournament was in 2008 when Barefoot was an assistant coach for the Lady Monarchs and helped them make the Sweet 16.
KAREN BAREFOOT SHOW
The Karen Barefoot Coach's Shows continue to pack the house at YNot Pizza in the Village behind the Ted. Joined by host Doug Ripley, Barefoot reviews the previous week's game and gives insight into the upcoming Lady Monarch matchups all season long. The next show is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 22nd at 6 p.m.
LADY MONARCHS INK TWO
Coach Barefoot announced the addition of Odegua Oigbokie and Destinee Young who signed letters of intent to play for the Lady Monarchs next fall on Nov. 14.
Oigbokie is a highly touted forward from Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., while Young is a power forward out of Hoffman Estates High School in Hoffmann Estates, Ill.
Oigbokie, who is 6-foot-1, averaged 18 points and eight rebounds as a junior and has been named all-district and all-region for Ridgeway the past two seasons. Young, who is also 6-foot-1, averaged 15.4 points and 11 rebounds as a junior at Hoffman Estates High School, where she already is the record holder for career rebounds and single-season blocks.
Out of the five recruits that second-year head coach Karen Barefoot has landed at ODU, four have been rated as three stars or better by ESPN. The other three were local freshmen guards Galaisha Goodhope out of Norfolk and LaQuanda Younger of Newport News and forward Chelisa Painter from Chesapeake who is sitting out this season after transferring from George Washington.
NEWCOMERS
Head Coach Karen Barefoot added three freshmen this season in local talented guards Galaisha Goodhope and LaQuanda Younger along with center Brittany Martin out of the New York. Transferring in are forward Shae Kelley and Miami (FL) transfer guard Stephanie Gardner. The incoming class is ranked the best in the CAA and No. 42 in the country overall.
