NORFOLK, VA--ODU senior DeShawn Painter scored 14 points with a career high 13 rebounds and Dimitri Batted added 12 points, but the Monarchs lost to CAA rival James Madison, 58-55 Wednesday evening at The Ted Constant Convocation Center.
JMU improves to 7-6 overall and 1-0 in the CAA , while ODU is now 2-12 overall and 0-2 in the CAA. It was the Dukes first win over ODU since 2008-09 (70-62 in the Constant Center), ending the Monarchs eight-game win streak against the Dukes.
JMU was led by forward Rayshawn Goins with 16 points and nine rebounds, followed by guard Ron Curry with 13 points, and four assists.
ODU led 21-19 with 3:43 left in the first half on a Aaron Bacote layup, but Curry came back with a three-pointer to give the Dukes a 22-21 lead with 3:24 left. After a AJ Davis layup to give the Dukes a 24-21 lead, Dimitri Batten hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 24 with 1:11 left in the half.
JMU's Charles Cooke then hit one of two free throws to put JMU up 25-24 at halftime and the Dukes never trailed again.
In the second half, JMU led by seven, 47-40 with 6:19 left in the game, but the Monarchs rallied and a DeShawn Painter layup with 2:20 left cut the lead to two, 51-49. Curry hit a layup, then Charles Cooke knocked down four free throws to put JMU back up 57-50 with 23 seconds left.
ODU's Nick Wright hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds left to cut it to 57-53, but Curry hit one of two free throws for a 58-53 lead with 12 seconds left. ODU freshman Deion Clark hit two free throws. After a JMU technical foul, but that ended the scoring at 58-55.
The Monarchs shot .370 (20-54), and held JMU to .364 (20-55). ODU held the rebounding edge, 40-37,but JMU scored 18 points off ODU turnovers. ODU has outrebounded 12 of 14 opponents this season. The other two games were even.
Tonight was Painter's third double-double in a row and fifth of the season. , while Donte Hill's six assists tied his career high.
ODU returns to action Saturday afternoon when they host Delaware at 12 noon in the Constant Center. The contest will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet.
