LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team tied the school record by connecting on 12 three-point baskets and put up a season-best 85 points on Wednesday night en route to defeating host UNLV, 85-67, in the opening day of the World Vision Classic at the Cox Pavilion.
Old Dominion (7-1) shot a season-best 53.1 % (34-64) from the field and forced more than 20 turnovers for the seventh time in eight games this season.
Spreading the wealth offensively, 10 different players scored in the first half as 12 players saw action in all for Old Dominion. Senior Jackie Cook scored 17 of her 23 points in the second half while sophomore Shae Kelley reached double digits for the fifth time in eight games this season.
Redshirt junior Rebecca Allison scored a career-high 14 points and nailed a career-best three field goals from behind the arc in 14 minutes off the bench while junior Stephanie Gardner scored six points in 10 minutes off the bench in her first career game in a Lady Monarch uniform.
Midway through the first half, ODU went on a 10-0 run and never looked back as they held a 39-27 advantage at halftime and opened their lead up to as much as 20 late in the second half.
The Lady Rebels (3-7) were led by Alana Cesarz who scored 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds and played all 40 minutes while Kelli Thompson added 18 points and four assists. UNLV had 22 turnovers and a 39-33 advantage on the board while shooting 38.6% from the field (22-57).
ODU had a 37-12 advantage in bench points and more assists (23) than turnovers (22) while both teams scored 27 points off turnovers.
Cook tied her career high with four three-pointers as she scored in double figures for the seventh time in eight games. Kelley added a well-balanced 14 points, seven rebounds, three blocks, four assists and a pair of steals.
Old Dominion returns to action on Thursday in the World Vision Classic when they take on No. 22 Texas A&M (7-3) at 8:30 p.m. (ET). The Aggies defeated Kansas State on Wednesday, 83-60.
