ODU Wins Gold in Frosh/Novice 8+ Race Again

Final Results: Head of the Hooch

NORFOLK, Va - The Old Dominion University women's rowing team competed in the Head of the Hooch Regatta over the weekend in Chattanooga, Tenn. The annual two day regatta consisted of over 10,000 rowers and nearly 2,000 boats this year. ODU had nine boats race in a total of six races throughout the weekend.

Head coach Daniel Garbutt said, "I am very pleased with our results from the Head of the Hooch. The team is really looking forward to this weekend in Charlottesville."

The Lady Monarchs finished in first place and won the gold medal in the Frosh/Novice 8+ race. Coxswain Lydia Cleveland led a boat consisting of Marisa Fruetel, Keira Flanagan, Colleen Rennie, Raven Howser, Ashley Nardiello, Brett Wolff, Lauren Wright, and Jenna Sterling (bow) to victory.

Old Dominion beat out the 49 other competing boats by finishing with a time of 17:28.3. ODU finished 11 seconds ahead of Conference USA (C-USA) member Tulsa, who took second place. In fact, the Lady Monarchs finished before a total of seven C-USA schools in this race, including: the University of Texas, the University of Tennessee, the University of Kansas, the University of Alabama, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Central Florida.

This is the second straight weekend that ODU has won the Frosh/Novice 8+ race, as they won this same race at the Head of Schuylhill in Philadelphia, Pa. last weekend.

Old Dominion earned the silver medal in the Lightweight 4+ race. Allison Giegerich directed a boat with Kiersten Stephens (4), Paige Madison (3), Keira Flanagan (2), and Meredith Kirby (1) to an 18:52.3 finishing time. A total of 10 boats participated in the race. ODU finished 43 seconds before third placed Orlando Rowing Club.

In the Open 8+ race, ODU's `A' boat finished in fourth place with a time of 17:18.4. Again, Old Dominion beat out fellow C-USA members Tulsa, Tennessee, Texas, and Kansas. The Lady Monarchs `B' boat placed 15th, while their `C' boat finished 23rd out of 43 total competitors.

ODU's Championship 8+ team finished in eighth (16:50.3) and `B' boat placed 25th (18:13.0) out of 30 boats.

The Lady Monarchs also had another top ten finish in the Novice 4+ race, where they finished 10th overall (20:57.3). A total of 34 boats competed in this race.

In the Championship 4+ event, Old Dominion placed 20th (19:11.7) out of 36 boats.

The Old Dominion University rowing team will conclude their fall season on Nov. 11 at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va.
