PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team closed the first half on a 13-1 run on Tuesday night and never looked back as they defeated Maryland Eastern Shore at the Hytche Center, 62-46.
Sophomore Shae Kelley recorded her first career double-double in an ODU uniform as she scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while senior Jackie Cook scored 18 points in the second half and a game-high 22 total points as Old Dominion moved to 4-0 on the season for the first time since the 1998-99 season.
Both teams came out sluggish in the first half as UMES shot just 4-for-26 (15.4%). The Lady Monarchs put together a strong run in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 26-17 lead into halftime.
In the second half, UMES was never able to get closer than nine points as Cook to over for the Lady Monarchs.
ODU outrebounded UMES, 46-34, and had a 30-10 advantage in points in the paint. The Lady Monarchs pressure defense allowed Old Dominion to take a 16-2 advantage in fast break points as well. ODU distributed the ball well as nine different players recorded an assist for a total of 16.
Maryland Eastern Shore (1-2) was led by Karona Roach who had 14 points and eight rebounds while Sha-Kiyla Finney added in 12 points and three steals. The Hawks shot just 13-for-53 (24.5%) in the contest to go along with 24 turnovers.
The Lady Monarchs now break now break for 10 days before returning to action at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. against No. 11 California in a game televised by Cox 11 locally.
