NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Jackie Cook registered her second career double-double and was one of three Lady Monarchs to register double figures to help power the Old Dominion University women's basketball team past VCU on Saturday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, 74-51.
The win snapped a four-game win streak by the Rams in the all-time series in which Old Dominion (3-0) has now won 56 of the 70 all-time meetings. After a 2-0 lead in the first minute of the game, the Rams did not lead again for the remainder of the contest as ODU stretched its lead to 25 points on numerous occasions in the second half.
The 3-0 start for the Lady Monarchs is their first since the 2007-08 season while the 23-point victory over VCU (0-3) is their largest since a 94-66 victory in Norfolk on Feb. 24, 2006.
Cook scored 12 points and scooped a game-high 10 rebounds while sophomore Ashley Betz-White scored a season-high 17 points to go along with four steals and three rebounds. Sophomore Myeisha Hall was the game's leading scorer at halftime with 10 points and five rebounds and finished with 11 points and eight rebounds in the contest.
Old Dominion's pressure defense continues to give opponents trouble as the Rams were forced into 20 turnovers with ODU scoring 22 points off those turnovers. VCU shot just 15.4% from three-point range as they were 2-for-13 in the game and shot just 31.3% from the field overall. ODU had a 16-0 advantage in fast break points.
On the season now, opponents are shooting just 3-for-31 (9.6%) from behind the arc.
Robyn Parks and her 14 points with 10 rebounds led the Rams while Shekinah Henry just missed VCU's second double-double with 12 rebounds and nine points. The Rams shot just 7-for-20 (35%) from the free throw line.
Old Dominion is back at it on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when they head on the road to face Maryland Eastern Shore.
