Four Lady Monarchs Named to All-Region Team

NORFOLK, Va. – Four members of the Old Dominion University field hockey team were named to the 2012 Longstretch/NFHCA Division I All-Region team on Thursday.

Named to the South Region’s First Team for ODU is freshman forward Sarah Breen, junior midfielder Kati Nearhouse and redshirt junior back Christy Longacre. Sophomore back Kelsey Smither was named to the second team.

Breen was named to the All-CAA Rookie Team and was All-CAA First Team in 2012 after scoring 12 goals and picking up eight assists in her rookie campaign. Breen had four game-winning goals on the season.

Nearhouse is on the All-South Region First Team for the second consecutive season after scoring a pair of goals to go along with two assists in 2012. The team co-captain was first team All-CAA this year and is a member of the U-21 U.S. National team.

Longacre became the seventh ODU player to be named CAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2012 and the third straight year the honor has gone to a Lady Monarch. She was a key component in a Lady Monarchs’ defense that allowed just seven goals in seven CAA contests and recorded two shutouts. Longacre ranks collected three defensive saves while also making her presence felt on offense on penalty corners, ranking third on the team with 10 goals while adding four assists.

Smither was named second team All-CAA after a stellar freshman campaign in 2011 in which she was the National Rookie of the Year. The sophomore led ODU with 11 assists on the season. It is the second consecutive year she has been named to the All-South second team.
