NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team takes on USC Upstate on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Ted Constant Conovcation Center in their 2012-13 home opener.

SERIES HISTORY
Old Dominion and USC Upstate meet for the first time on Tuesday in Norfolk. The Lady Monarchs are 31-12 all-time in home openers. ODU defeated Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Friday in their season-opener, 55-35. The 35 points the Hokies scored against was the fewest against ODU since 1927 in their first ever meeting, a 31-29 ODU win. ODU improved to 29-15 all-time in season openers with the win at Virginia Tech on Friday.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
The Spartans are coming off an 82-47 loss on Saturday at Purdue in their season-opener. Tee’Ara Copney was named to the 2012-13 Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team, after averaging 15.7 points per game last season and ranking third in the A-Sun in scoring average. She was an All-Conference First Team selection at the end of the 2011-12 season. In the 2012-13 A-Sun Preseason Coaches Poll, Upstate was picked seventh, tallying 35 points alongside league newcomer Northern Kentucky, who also garnered 35 points. The Spartans also claimed seventh in the A-Sun Preseason Media Poll, collecting 93 points.

USC Upstate return six players from last year’s squad, including redshirt freshman Maddie Herr and welcome seven newcomers. Upstate welcomes four freshmen (Brittany Clency, Travonda Haddock, Tweety Hawkins and Brittany Starling) and a trio of junior college transfers (Shanice Cooper, KeArrow Jenkins and Valese McAllister).

Karen Barefoot
ODU head coach Karen Barefoot enters her 14th year as a head coach in 2012-13 and 200 plus wins in her career as she leads the Lady Monarch program in year two. As head coach at the Apprentice School in 2001, she led the Builders to a National Championship in the school’s first ever women’s sport while taking Lenoir-Rhyne the NCAA Tournament in the 2002-03 season. In 2010-11 while at Elon, she led the Phoenix to the WBI, the schools first ever women’s basketball tournament appearance. The last time that ODU made the NCAA Tournament was in 2008 when Barefoot was an assistant coach for the Lady Monarchs and helped them make the Sweet 16.

ODU PUTS THE DEFENSIVE CLAMPS ON THE HOKIES
Senior Jackie Cook (17 pts, 9 asst) and sophomore Shae Kelley (14 pts, 9 asst) each missed a double-double by just a single assist as the Lady Monarchs locked down defensively in their season-opening 55-35 win at Virginia Tech on Friday.

It was the lowest output for the Hokies against ODU since their initial meeting back in 1972 when VT scored 29 points, a span of 30 games. The last time ODU held an opponent to 35 total points and 13 points at the half was on Dec. 8, 2010 vs. George Washington.

Virginia Tech shot just 19.6% in the first half from the field and finished the game 0-for-12 from behind the arc.
