NORFOLK, Va. - The tenth-ranked Old Dominion University field hockey team doubled up 18th-ranked Drexel on a soggy Sunday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex, 4-2.
The loss for Drexel (10-4, 3-1) is their first in league play this year as Old Dominion (10-3, 5-0) now stands as the only undefeated team in CAA action. The Lady Monarchs have won seven consecutive games.
Senior forward Kimberly Oakes scored a pair of goals to power the ODU offense as the she scored at the 10 minute mark on a pass from fellow senior Maartje van Rijswijk. One minute later, van Rijswijk scored herself as she put it past Drexel goalkeeper Jantien Gunter.
The Dragons cut the lead in half when Lindsay McArdle scored from the left side when she put it just redshirt senior goalkeeper Marla Petriello into the right corner of the cage.
Redshirt junior co-captain Christy Longacre scored the third goal of the day for the Lady Monarchs in the 21st minute when she took the rebound off Gunter and into the cage.
In the 30th minute, Elise DiDonato scored on a pass in front of the cage from Amanda Fleischut to cut the lead back to one goal but seconds before the halftime buzzer, Oakes was able to tip in her second goal of the game from Longacre off a penalty corner to make it 4-2.
ODU held the advantage in shots, 20-10, and in penalty corners, 8-4. Gunter had nine saves for Drexel while Petriello had one for Old Dominion.
The Lady Monarchs closes out a six-game homestand next weekend as they host the Maryland on Friday, Oct. 12th at 5 p.m. and Duke on Sunday, Oct. 14th at 1 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
