NORFOLK, VA--Nationally ranked Old Dominion (7-1-1/1-1-1) battled James Madison (4-4-2/2-0-1) for 110 minutes, including two overtime periods for a 0-0 tie Wednesday night at the ODU Soccer Stadium. ODU came into the match ranked ninth by College Soccer News, 11th by the NSCAA/Coaches, 12th by Soccer America and 13th by Soccer Times.
Tonight's outcome was the 10th overtime in 38 games of the series which started in 1972, and the fifth time since 2005.
The Monarchs outshot the Dukes, 22-12 overall and 9-5 in shots on goal. ODU's senior goalkeeper Victor Francoz (Fleurieu sur Saone, France) had five saves on the night, while JMU's Colin Newcity had nine, including a header by Tim Hopkinson in the final seconds of the match, as well as in the first half whenODU threatened on numerous occasions. Francoz came up big earlier in the second period with a save on Jamal Umar's shot.
Francoz lowered his goals against average to 1.09 and this was the MOnarchs fourthshutout of the season.
Junior forward Tim Hopkinson (Nottingham, England) had four shots on goal, while senior co-captain Chris Harmon (Downingtown, PA.) had three for ODU. The Dukes were led by Jamal Umar with two shots on goal.
ODU returns to action Sunday afternoon when they travel to Newark, DE to play Delaware at 4 p.m.
