NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University field hockey team finished undefeated in CAA action on Saturday night with their second win in overtime over William and Mary this week as sophomore Rosario Villagra’s goal five minutes into the extra period lifted the Lady Monarchs to the win, 2-1.
The win was the 560th of head coach Beth Anders’ career as Old Dominion (14-5, 7-0) now awaits a possible NCAA at-large berth, which will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 6th at 8 p.m. and streamed live on NCAA.com.
The game was the third in four days for the Lady Monarchs who were forced to move the game up from Sunday due to impending weather related issue from Hurricane Sandy. After not playing any overtime games all season, ODU played two against the Tribe this week as they defeated William and Mary in Norfolk on Wednesday in a non-conference match, 3-2.
After a scoreless first half that saw just one shot for William and Mary (10-8, 3-4) and six for ODU, things heated up in the second half as redshirt junior co-captain Christy Longacre scored the game’s first goal in the 51st minute when sophomore Kelsey Smither’s initial shot off a penalty corner was saved but Longacre was able to put in the rebound for her 10th goal of the season.
The Tribe was able to get the equalizer just five minutes later when Taylor Hodge clocked one in on the left side from 12 yards out past redshirt senior goalkeeper Marla Petriello’s outstretched stick. William and Mary put on a strong push late with several shots and corners but to no avail.
In overtime, the Tribe got an opportunity early in overtime with a penalty corner and a shot that went in the cage but was too high. On the counterattack, ODU converted when Villagra weaved from outside the circle past several Tribe defenders and blasted a shot from 15 yards out on the right past a diving Elizabeth Frey for the game-winner.
ODU outshot W&M, 12-10 and had the 6-3 advantage in penalty corners. Petriello had four saves while Frey had three.
