NORFOLK, Va. - Freshman back Emily Harting scored her first collegiate goal on a penalty stroke in overtime to lift No. 9 Old Dominion past William and Mary at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex on Wednesday evening.
Wednesday's game was the 700th for head coach Beth Anders on the sideline as she won her 559th career game. It was the first overtime gave for Old Dominion this season.
Scoring in regulation happened swiftly in the beginning of both halves as neither team was able to keep a lead for very long in the game. Pip Saunders put the game's first goal in past redshirt senior goalkeeper Marla Petriello in the sixth minute of play in traffic around the cage. Just 30 seconds later, redshirt sophomore Nicole Goff responded when she pushed the ball around Tribe goalkeeper Catherine Johnson on the left side for the equalizer.
Both sides had scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the half but neither was able to cash in. ODU wasted little in the second half as sophomore Rosario Villagra blasted a shot past new Tribe goalkeeper Elizabeth Frey just 25 seconds in the second half when she was fed the ball from redshirt junior Danielle Clutter for the wide open goal. Again that lead did not last long as Saunders scored again for William and Mary (10-7) less than two minutes later she dribbled past the ODU defense and on her way to the ground pushed the ball past Petriello on the left side and in to the goal once again.
Down to six position players each in overtime, Old Dominion (13-4) dominated as the outshot William and Mary, 9-2, in the extra frame with multiple opportunities. The Lady Monarchs would eventually take advantage when Frey came out of the goal and charged Villagra inside the circle where she was upended and a penalty stroke was called. Anders then sent in Harting from the sideline to take the shot and she put it up and past Frey on the right side for the game-winner with 2:03 remaining in the first overtime period.
The Lady Monarchs outshot the Tribe, 27-11 and had a 9-3 edge in penalty corners. Petriello had five saves for ODU while improving to 11-2 on the season. Frey fell to 6-6 on the year while gathering eight saves while Johnson had three saves for William and Mary.
Old Dominion hosts No. 1 North Carolina (16-1) on Friday at 5 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex in the final regular season home contest for Anders. Seniors Julie Hodge, Kimberly Oakes, Marla Petriello and Maartje van Rijswijk will be honored following the game.
