HARRISONBURG, Va. – The ninth-ranked Old Dominion University field hockey team smothered James Madison defensively on Sunday to remain undefeated in league play in a 2-0 win at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.

The Dukes (9-7, 3-3) were held to just one shot through the first 65 minutes of the contest by the ODU defense before they managed three shots and three penalty corners in the final five minutes of the game. It is the second time in the last three conference games that ODU has held their opponent to less than four shots in the game as they held Towson to just one shot on Oct. 5 in Norfolk.

The Lady Monarchs (12-4, 6-0) cashed in on a penalty corner in the 14th minute as freshman Sarah Breen scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season as her shot was assisted by sophomores Rosario Villagra and Kelsey Smither.

ODU had the 6-0 edge in shots and 2-0 edge in corners at halftime. In the second half, Old Dominion would again capitalize off a penalty corner as redshirt junior co-captain Christy Longacre put one past JMU goalkeeper Lena Wimmert on another assist from Smither in the 54th minute of action to give the Lady Monarchs a two-goal lead.

ODU outshot JMU, 18-4, and had the edge in penalty corners, 7-4. Petriello posted her second shutout of the season and collected two saves for the Lady Monarchs while improving to 10-2 on the season while Wimmert had 11 saves in goal for the Dukes.

Old Dominion has three games in the final week of the regular season beginning on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when they host William and Mary in a non-conference match at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The Lady Monarchs then host North Carolina at 5 p.m. on Friday on Senior Night and close out the regular season in Williamsburg against the Tribe on Sunday at noon in a CAA match-up.
