ODU Rally Falls Short at William and Mary, Fall 83-80

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Ashley Betz-White and Tia Lewis combined for 45 points but a furious late rally by Old Dominion fell just short, as ODU fell 83-80.

After William and Mary cut down a 12 point lead by ODU and built an 11 point lead with three minutes to play, ODU went on an 11-4 run, with seven points coming from Betz-White and four from Lewis, to cut the lead to 81-77.

Anna Kestler made one foul shot to make the lead 82-77, but Betz-White added her third three-pointer of the half to cut the lead to 82-80.

Katherine DeHenzel hit 1-of-2 foul shots for the Tribe and Betz-White's last second half court shot fell just wide.

Mairi Buchan gave ODU a 60-49 lead with 12:39 to go, but the Tribe countered with a 16-2 run, 12 coming from Taysha Pye, to take a 65-62 lead with just under seven minutes to play.

W&M pushed their lead to 11 with a 9-0 run before the Lady Monarchs started their valiant comeback.

ODU pushed out to a seven-point lead early in the second half as Betz-White hit three foul shots and Lewis added a putback to give the Lady Monarchs a 44-37 lead.

After a Tribe timeout, Betz-White hit consecutive three-pointers to stretch the lead to eight at 50-42.

Lewis gave ODU a quick 6-2 lead with back-to-back baskets, but the Tribe took a 7-6 lead on a three-pointer from Janine Aldridge. Becca Allison tied the score and Mairi Buchan gave ODU a 10-7 lead with a three-pointer.

Buchan gave the Lady Monarchs the lead back at 14-12 with a pair of free throws but Aldridge hit another three to give the Tribe a 15-14 lead.

William and Mary took a 21-18 lead on a jumper from Pye, but ODU went on an 8-0 run, spured by three-point plays from Lewis and Jackie Cook, to take a 26-21 lead.

The Tribe fought back to tie the score at 26 on two foul shots from Pye, but Betz-White hit a three with 18 seconds to go to give ODU a 34-32 lead at the break.

ODU was able to outrebound William and Mary 41-33, but the Tribe got to the foul line 35 times to just 17 for the Lady Monarchs. Pye went 11-of-14 from charity stripe, while W&M shot 26 free throws in the second half compared to ODU's 17 for the whole game.

Lewis led ODU with 23 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Betz-White tied her career-high with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including four three-pointers, including 19 points in the second half. Buchan chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.

Pye led the Tribe with 23 points, 19 coming in the second half. Emily Correal had 18 points and eight rebounds while Aldridge added 15 points.

ODU is back in action Sunday, January 29, when they take on George Mason at 2 p.m.
