Lady Monarchs Drop Hard Fought Overtime Contest at VCU, 76-72

RICHMOND, Va. - Tia Lewis had 21 points and Jackie Cook recorded a career-high 20, but Old Dominion came up just short in overtime, falling 76-72 at VCU Wednesday night in Richmond.

After just missing a shot attempt to win the game in regulation, VCU scored six points in overtime, four from the foul line, to come away with the win.

VCU scored the first five points of the overtime, but Myeisha Hall hit a layup to cut the score to 75-72, but Robyn Hobson hit a foul shot with 1.1 second left to clinch the game for the Rams.

Lewis put ODU up two with a pair of foul shots but Chelsea Snyder tied the score with a putback at 70. Both teams had chances but neither team converted to send the game into overtime.

With ODU up 66-63, Robyn Hobson hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 66. Cook hit a layup for ODU and Barbour added a jumper to tie the score for the Rams.

The score went back and forth, when the Lady Monarchs grabbed a 58-55 lead with a Jackie Cook three-pointer but VCU hung close, as Barbour hit a layup. VCU retook the lead on a pair of free throws from Robyn Parks but ODU followed with consecutive baskets from Jackie Cook and Mairi Buchan.

ODU scored the first points of the second half on a JoNiquia Guilford layup, but VCU countered with an 11-0 run, six points coming from Hurt. Cook gave ODU the lead back with a short jumper.

Lewis gave ODU a 10-7 lead early and a Tiffany Minor three-pointer stretched the lead to 18-13 with 11 minutes to play.

Cook and Barbour carried their teams early, as Cook scored six of ODU's first eight and Barbour had 10 of VCU's first 13.

Mairi Buchan stretched the Lady Monarch lead to seven at 24-17 with a pair of free throws with 9:30 remaining.

VCU came back with a 7-0 run to tie the score but Lewis hit a jumper from the foul line to give ODU the lead back at 26-24.

ODU stormed right back with a 10-2 run to take a 36-28 lead. Lewis, JoNiquia Guilford, Mairi Buchan and Myeisha Hall and Cook all contributed to the scoring run.

The Lady Monarchs added to their lead, making it 41-30 on layups from Lewis and Buchan. VCU hit back-to-back three's from Hurt and Christina Carter, but ODU got breakaway layups from Becca Allison and Ashley Betz-White to end the half.

Lewis led ODU with 21 points while Cook had a career-best 20 points, while Buchan chipped in 10.

Barbour led the Rams with a game-high 24 points while Hurt had 22 points and 16 rebounds.

The Lady Monarchs return home to face Hofstra Sunday, Jan. 15 at 3 p.m.
