NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman midfielder Sarah Breen of the fifth-ranked Old Dominion University field hockey team has been named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Breen (Taylors Hill, Australia/Maribyrong College) scored a goal in both games last weekend as ODU went 1-1 against top-10 ACC opponents on the road. The freshman scored on the game’s first penalty corner at No. 1 Maryland on Friday as the Lady Monarchs upset the two-time defending national champions, 2-1. It also marked the third consecutive regular season victory over the Terps for ODU and was Maryland’s first loss in their home opener in 17 years.

The freshman has scored in three of ODU’s four games this season as she also tallied a goal in a 5-4 setback at No. 8 Virginia on Sunday off a penalty corner set in the 59th minute as ODU scored twice in one minute in their comeback effort. Breen leads ODU with three goals this season.

After opening the season with four consecutive road contests, all against ranked opponents and three of which were against teams ranked in the top-10, Old Dominion will host Radford on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex in their 2012 home opener when they return to action.
