NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman midfielder Sarah Breen of the eighth-ranked Old Dominion University field hockey team has been named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Player and Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Breen (Taylors Hill, Australia/Maribyrong College) had a goal and three assists over the weekend as she helped No. 9 Old Dominion to start off 2-0 in CAA action. Down 2-0 at Hofstra on Friday, Breen got the Lady Monarchs on the board off a penalty corner. She also had a pair of assists on the next two goals to give ODU the lead as they scored seven unanswered goals to cruise past the Pride.

On Sunday, she recorded the game-winning assist over No. 8 Northeastern as her shot on a penalty corner was deflected in by fellow freshman Celine Marquet just before the half that ultimately gave the Lady Monarchs the 2-1 win over the Huskies. Breen leads the team in points (14) this season and is tied for the team lead in goals (5).

This is the second weekly award for Breen who was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Sept. 4 after she helped the Lady Monarchs take down No. 1 Maryland in College Park, Md.

After starting the 2012 season with eight of their first nine contests on the road, Old Dominion finishes the season with eight of their final 10 games at home beginning with a six-game homestand on Friday, when they host Richmond at 5 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
