CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Old Dominion freshman Ivana Vukovic won the B-singles championship over the weekend at the UVA Invitational to lead the Lady Monarchs in a strong showing.
Vukovic was solid in her first collegiate tournament, winning both easily and also tough matches. She started the weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Winthrop's Ekin Gunaysu before defeating Marshall's Ellie Ball in a tough 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 triumph. She finished the tournament with a pair of wins over UNC Greensboro opponents, starting with a 6-3, 0-6, 7-5 victory over Annette Rios in the semifinals and dispatched Dilara Turtkuran 6-1, 3-0 (ret) in the finals.
Aleksandra Mitrovska started her tournament with a win over No. 99 Maria Fuccillo of Virginia, 6-4, 7-5. She dropped a tough three-setter to Winthrop's Andressa Garcia 7-5, 3-6, 6-0 before defeating Marshall's Dominika Zapranz 6-7, 6-3 (10-7). She dropped her final match to Virginia's Caryssa Peretz, 6-0, 3-6 (10-7).
Nika Khmolovska and Juliana Pires also earned a pair of wins. Khmolovska defeated Xue Zhang of Wake Forest 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and William and Mary's Sydney Smith 6-3, 6-2. Pires knocked off Jackie Lee of W&M and Wake Forest's Brigita Bercyle.
Diana Ivanova and Mitrovska were solid in doubles going 3-1. They defeated a team from William and Mary 8-3 to start the weekend and earned a default victory over the No. 20 team of Virginia. They fell 8-6 to Wake Forest before ending the tournament with a 9-7 win over Marshall.
